Lebanon: online Italian courses for Lebanese women

(To UNIFIL)
30/11/20

An online course of basic knowledge of the Italian language organized by the Blue Helmets of the Italian contingent of west sector UNIFIL, the United Nations Force deployed in southern Lebanon, in favor of some women from the municipality of Ain Ebel, a town of about 1.500 inhabitants located in the district of Bint Jbeil.

This was the request made by the mayor of Ain Ebel, and accepted by Brigadier General Andrea Di Stasio, commander of the west sector of UNIFIL.

The course, scheduled twice a week, will end in December with the “virtual” delivery ceremony of the certificates of attendance.

The activity was organized by the gender advisor of the Italian contingent according to the criteria and methods for carrying out distance learning, in order to comply with the rules aimed at containing covid19.

At the presentation of the course, General Di Stasio declared that "Learning the Italian language not only facilitates cultural exchange, but also serves to strengthen the relationships of friendship between peoples historically linked by common roots and by important experiences of dialogue and mutual respect", while the mayor of Ain Ebel thanked the Italian military who, despite the difficulties arising from the Coronavirus emergency and the lockdown imposed in recent days by the Lebanese government, did their utmost to give Italian lessons online.

Assistance to the Lebanese population, together with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and support for the Lebanese armed forces, is one of the main tasks assigned to the Italian contingent of UNIFIL in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
