Lebanon: Italian Blue Helmets deliver food

More than 4 tons of pasta were distributed by the soldiers of the Italian UNIFIL contingent to two rest and care homes in Tiro and Abbassiyah, in southern Lebanon.

The facilities house about 200 elderly people, many of whom are not self-sufficient due to physical and mental disabilities, who require medical, nursing and rehabilitation assistance.

The directors of the two structures expressed their heartfelt thanks to Italy and the peacekeepers of the national contingent adding that "in addition to the nutritional aspect, a healthy and pleasant meal consumed at the table also produces beneficial effects from a relational point of view, generating elderly guests moments of pleasant emotional exchange ".

The packs of pasta were loaded and transported on board United Nations vehicles in compliance with the precautionary measures and sanitary requirements in force.

The current initiative follows the special distribution plan of over 30 tons of basic foodstuffs carried out by the Italian Blue Helmets in October, and designed to reach particularly needy people and families - including the guests of some orphanages and centers for the disabled. - through the volunteers of the Red Cross and the welfare structures of all religious denominations present in the area of ​​operations of the Italian contingent.

"In this difficult time marked by the Coronavirus, ours wants to be not only a concrete act towards the Lebanese people, but above all a gesture of generosity and altruism typical of the Italian soldier who aims straight at the dignity of the most fragile people", said the commander of the Italian contingent in Lebanon, Brigadier General Andrea Di Stasio.
