The handover ceremony of the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon) Western Sector Command took place at the “Millevoi” base in Shama, home to the Italian-led UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon) Western Sector Command. HQ support unit of the West Sector of UNIFIL between Lieutenant Colonel David De Petris and Lieutenant Colonel Pasquale Communara.
The handover ceremony was attended by General Nicola Mandolesi, commander of the Italian contingent and of the West Sector of UNIFIL, which underlined the fundamental role played by the HQ support unit in carrying out the mission, made possible thanks to the assistance provided by the soldiers of the "Leonessa" battalion of the 11th transmission regiment, by dog units of the military veterinary center of Grosseto and by Armenian military personnel.
With the installation of Lieutenant Colonel Communara at the head of the specialized technical units provided by the transmission command and the “Tonale” battalion of the 11th transmission regiment, the Italian mission in Lebanon continues, led by the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” brigade, on its seventh mission in Lebanon under the colors of the United Nations.
In the command of the West Sector UNIFIL has 3.800 blue helmets from 17 of the 48 contributing countries operating in the mission, with the task of monitoring the situation on the ground, reporting violations of 1701, supporting the cessation of hostilities agreement and at the same time supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces in redeploying in some locations in southern Lebanon. The multinational contingent includes 1.000 Italian soldiers, of which 700 belong to the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” brigade.
