KOSOVO, KFOR fundamental presence for security

20/09/14

The commander of the NATO multinational force KFOR, division general Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, recently concluded a series of meetings with the main civil and political authorities of Pristina, the heads of the European and United Nations missions, representatives of the international community and the ambassadors of the countries accredited in Kosovo.

General Figliuolo, who took command of the KFOR mission last 3 September, during the meetings confirmed the commitment of KFOR to guarantee security and freedom of movement in the region and in particular in the north where there is a greater concentration of Serbian community.

These periodic meetings, based on dialogue and cooperation, represent an important success factor for the NATO KFOR mission and for the improvement of relations between Pristina and Belgrade.

"KFOR represents a fundamental presence that contributes decisively to the security and progress of Kosovo," the president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, recently reiterated.

The presence of KFOR has gradually decreased over the years, in terms of troops operating on the ground.

The strength present today is ten times lower than in 1999 while the perceived security is far greater.

Of the 55 thousand soldiers deployed at the beginning of the mission, in fact, there are now about 5500, coming from 31 nations, operating under the command of General Figliuolo.
