The President of the Finnish Republic visits UNIFIL

The president of the Finnish republic, mr. Sauli Niinistö arrived in the south of Lebanon on an official visit to the UNIFIL mission. Division General Paolo Serra, head of the mission and UN force commander in southern Lebanon, met with President Niinistö at the Finnish military base 2-45.

During the meeting, General Serra illustrated the ongoing activities related to the mandate of the UN Security Council 1701 resolution, providing an update of the operational framework.

During the meeting the Finnish president expressed words of appreciation for the meritorious work carried out by the civil and military personnel of the UNIFIL mission in the context of the delicate historical moment, highlighting the high profile of the mission.

UNIFIL, at the moment, consists of approximately 12000 military personnel from 38 Nations and 1000 civil servants, including local 700 and international 300. The data provided also includes the strong naval component of 7 Ships and 1000 sailors, constituting the Maritime Task Force operating along the Lebanese coasts, and the ITALAIR Task Force, consisting of 6 helicopters. Finland contributes to the UNIFIL mission with over 300 peacekeepers.
