(To Marina Militare)
18/11/24

The tactical commander of theOperation Safe Mediterranean, Admiral Andrea Petroni, accompanied by the commander of the frigate Luigi Rizzo, visited the USS New York on the occasion of the stop at the Souda naval base in Crete.

The meeting with the commander of the amphibious naval unit and his crew, in addition to confirming once again the closeness and mutual recognition that exists between the two allied navies, provided the opportunity for a delegation of the ship's crew Luigi Rizzo, OMS flagship, to gain a closer understanding of the resources, environments and professional reality of an operational ship that the Americans consider a symbol of national unity.

The ship takes its name from the city in New York State that was attacked in 2001 and, in addition to being built with part of the steel from the Twin Towers, it jealously guards today some of the relics recovered from Ground Zero, linked to all those who tragically disappeared and to the heroes who took part in the actions to manage the emergency.

This last detail finds a further union between the two naval units, made of history and tradition, as represented by the relics belonging to the Gold Medal for Military Valor that gives the ship its name, kept on board the frigate. Luigi Rizzo.

The important opportunity for professional discussion continued in the afternoon with a reciprocated visit from a delegation from the USS New York on board the Italian FREMM.

The activity ended with a mutual goodbye between the two crews and the hope to share new operational experiences in the future, aimed at ensuring safety and stability.
