The 4 mayors of the municipalities of northern Kosovo

The commander of the Kosovo Force (KFOR), divisional general Salvatore Farina, received the mayor of Leposavic, Dragan Jablanovic, the mayor of Mitrovica, at the headquarters of "Film City" in Pristina, the headquarters of the command of NATO forces in Kosovo, north, Goran Rakic, the mayor of Zubin Potok, Stevan Vulovic and the mayor of Zvecan, Vucina Jankovic, the four municipalities of northern Kosovo with a Serbian majority.

During the meeting the topic of security in Kosovo was addressed with particular reference to the north. General Farina and the mayors, gathered together for the first time, agreed on the importance of mutual cooperation and transparency in the relations between KFOR and the municipalities they represented.

During the meeting, General Farina underlined the importance of Kosovo Police as "first responsible" in guaranteeing security and public order in favor of the Kosovo citizens in collaboration with the international staff of the European-led police mission called EULEX (European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo) which operates as a "second responsible".

"KFOR will continue to guarantee a safe environment in the north and throughout the rest of Kosovo", added General Farina, "always ready to intervene, as a third party, if required and necessary".

The KFOR commander reiterated that "the Kosovo Force will not tolerate acts of violence and threats to security and freedom of movement".

General Farina also underlined the value of the agreement between Pristina and Belgrade, signed last year's 19 last year under the auspices of the European Union, which encouraged dialogue between the parties and thus contributed to improving the general security situation in Kosovo confirming, at the same time, the continuous and impartial NATO effort to support peace, cooperation and progress throughout the territory.

At the end of the meeting, the General thanked the mayors for their willingness to dialogue and took note of the cooperation so far demonstrated, aimed at improving relations between the northern communities they represent and the institutions of Kosovo.
