Djibouti: the MIADIT Somalia 18 training mission is underway

MIADIT Somalia 18 (Italian training mission) took office today, now in its eighteenth edition. ​The mission, born out of Italy-Somalia and Italy-Djibouti bilateral agreements, entrusted to a team of specialized soldiers of the Carabinieri under the command of Colonel Luciano Calabrò, aims to create the conditions for the stabilization of Somalia and of the entire Region of the Horn of Africa, through the training of the Somali Police Force (SPF) the increase of the operational capabilities of the security forces of the Republic of Djibouti.

The training cycle will be dedicated to various technical-professional subjects and operational intervention procedures, through the use of a contingent of instructors belonging to the various functional organizations of the Arma, coming from the 2nd mobile brigade, from the 1st rgt cc paratroopers Tuscania, from the GIS (Special Intervention Group), from the 7th rgt cc "Trentino Alto Adige", from the 13th rgt cc "Friuli Venezia Giulia", from the 1st mobile brigade, from CoESPU (Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units) and from 'Territorial, Training and Specialist Weapon.

While waiting for the students of the Somali Police to arrive in Djibouti with military flights on 12 and 13 March, the final details are being prepared for the start of the advanced course for the officers and units of the "Darawish" companies of the Somali Police Force (SPF). The two courses are aimed at transmitting knowledge and operational skills useful for defense operations, stabilization and control of the territory, in order to increase the ability to combat the terrorist group of Al-Shabaab.

Particular attention will be paid to International Humanitarian Law and its inspiring principles in order to crystallize in students notions that will form the basis of their modus operandi.

The "Darawish" course, particularly appreciated by the Somali government and by the stakeholders, will be oriented towards building and strengthening operational capabilities typical of a "Robust Police" employed in military and police operations, aimed at controlling the territory and contrasting terrorist organizations.

The first training activities on "technical scientific surveys and laboratory analyzes" will begin on 14 March, held by personnel of the RaCIS (Carabinieri Scientific Investigations Group) at the EI3PJ school (École Internationale de Perfectionnement à la Pratique de la Police Judiciaire) of the Gendarmerie and "anti-terrorism and organized crime" by staff of the ROS (Special Operations Group) at the Police Academy.
