EUNAVFOR Atalanta: donation of medical supplies to Djibouti

(To Greater Defense)

In recent days, Nave Durand de la Penne, mooring in the port of Djibouti for the last time as the flagship of the EUNAVFOR operation Atalanta, donated medical material provided by the “Francesca Rava – NPH Italia” Foundation to the “Cheiko” hospital in Balbalà, one of the poorest and most densely populated neighborhoods of the city of Djibouti.

The “Cheiko” hospital was founded in 1985 as a maternal and child centre, thanks to Italian collaborations. The structure, subsequently expanded to become a real hospital, is today a point of reference for the entire local community and is equipped with paediatrics, internal medicine, cardiology and oncology departments with modern and technologically advanced electro-medical equipment.

The list of donated supplies ranges from devices of considerable importance, such as diagnostic cameras equipped with cutting-edge and latest generation lenses, to essential materials for daily management, including pediatric sphygma, surgical and FFP3 masks and COVID-19 serological tests . This selection was carefully considered, considering the ongoing threat of the pandemic in the city's poorest and most densely populated neighborhoods.

The “Francesca Rava” Foundation, with the support of operational command of interforce forces (COVI), of the general staff of the Navy, of the Italian embassy in Addis Ababa, of the military base in support of Djibouti and of Nave "de la Penne", wanted to direct its donation, maintaining a particular focus on the needs of the youngest patients.

The delivery ceremony was attended by the military attaché in Addis Ababa, Colonel Marco Poddi, the commander of the ship "de la Penne", captain Gaetano Ettorre, the medical director, the financial director and the staff of the "Cheiko" hospital. of Balbalà, which after the signing allowed a visit to the gynecology and pediatrics departments, among the most advanced in the country.

The medical director of the hospital took the opportunity to thank the Italian contingent in Djibouti, constantly close to the Djiboutian community, and express the most sincere gratitude for the work of the “Francesca Rava – NPH Italia” Foundation and for its commitment and for the collaboration continues with the Italian Navy.

This synergy, born in 2010 in the tragic context of the earthquake that hit the already tormented territory of Haiti, has maintained its vitality over time, bringing constant aid to hundreds of children in the areas of operation of the ships of the Italian Navy.
