Italian engineers framed in the EU mission in the Central African Republic EUFOR RCA completed their first activity yesterday, completing work to improve access to the capital's airport.

Within a week, a specialized team from the 8 ° regiment of the Folgore paratroop brigade repaired and consolidated the road section at the entrance to the M'Poko airport in Bangui, currently guarded by EUFOR forces, by means of various operating machines. .

The smoothest and safest access to the airport area - the only connection terminal of the country with the outside - will also benefit the thousands of people who fled from conflict-affected areas in recent months, who found good luck in refugee camps assisted by organizations humanitarians, close to the airport.

In the coming weeks, in addition to work to strengthen the security of the European contingent, the army engineers will conduct several projects with immediate impact in favor of the population of Bangui in parallel.

The Italian contribution to the EUFOR RCA multinational mission, of 750 units operating in the capital of the African country since last 15 June with the aim of creating a safe environment and allow humanitarian assistance to the civilian population , acting as a bridge to the UN MINUSCA mission that will begin to take sides in the coming weeks.

The Italian contingent has an important engineering machinery pool and a large number of 'Lince' armored vehicles equipped with a 'Hitrole' remote-controlled turret, the high-tech Italian weapon system developed for crew protection.

In the past few days, the capacities of the Italian genius detachment have been presented to the operational commander of the EUFOR RCA mission, the French general Philippe Pontiès, visiting Bangui, who underlined the positive impact on the population that the Italian military will bring to the area of ​​the European Union mission.
