Antarctica: the Armed Forces in underwater scientific research

It has arrived in Antarctica, at the Italian base Mario Zucchelli, a decompression chamber in the container of the divers and raiders group Theseus Tesei (COMSUBIN) of the Navy.

Following an agreement between the Armed Forces and the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), this precious asset of the operating group divers of COMSUBIN will allow divers who are part of the 38th Italian expedition to Antarctica to support underwater research in the context of all scientific projects that will be conducted under the pack or in the open sea.

Twenty-three Italian soldiers from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Arma dei Carabinieri take part in the 2022-23 summer campaign whose expected duration is 4 months.

The Defense specialists, within the specific competences of the Armed Forces to which they belong, give support to the PNRA, for external campaigns, naval and underwater activities, helicopter and aircraft operations, meteorological forecasts and completion of the land runway, contributing the achievement of the objectives of the expedition.
