Afghanistan: visit of COM COI to Herat

13/01/15

- A few days after the launch of the new Mission Resolute Support (RS), the commander of the Inter-operative Summit Command Unit (COI), general of the Marco Bertolini corps, visited the Train Advise Assist Command West (TAAC-W ), Italian-led multinational command based on the "Garibaldi" bersaglieri brigade, based in Herat.

The IOC commander received an update on the operational situation and the progress of the mission by the commander of the TAAC W, Brigadier General Maurizio Angelo Scardino, who also illustrated the new configuration of the forces and the fundamental phases of the transition from ISAF to RS. A delicate moment, which the Italian military is facing in the best way. "After about 13 years," said General Bertolini, "we are concluding our commitment in this land, to which we have given a lot and from which we have received a lot". Finally turning a thought to the 54 fallen in Afghanistan in the fulfillment of duty, the IOC commander said that "it is precisely thanks to the sacrifice of those who gave their lives that we are today a homeland and this sacrifice continues with everyone's commitment the days". The TAAC W is at the same time engaged in the Itaca 2 operation, which has already brought over Italy 13.000 linear meters of vehicles and materials through a complex air and naval bridge; the most impressive logistics operation after the end of the Second World War.
