Afghanistan: JMOU working on airlift

In the Italian contingent of the "Resolute Support" mission in Afghanistan, currently based on the 132nd "Ariete" armored brigade under the command of Brigadier General Enrico Barduani, Joint Multimodal Operation Unit (JMOU), unit formed by personnel of the Air Force and the Army, with the task of managing the movement of passengers and materials in transit from the Herat airport and carrying out Reception Staging Onward Movement (RSOM).

In recent weeks, the JMOU has successfully finalized the movement of a large amount of vehicles and materials used by the contingents in rotation in the theater, managing an airlift with Antonov and Ilyushin IL-76 carriers.

In particular, the personnel of the unit, supported by the operational and logistic components of the "Arena" Task Force, at which the JMOU is part of the Train Advise Assist Command West, conducted, over a period of about one month, the planning, preparation, loading and safety operations of 13 ISO 20 containers, 3 TLM shelters and 20 tactical vehicles and helicopters, for a total of 210 tons of cargo and 1.200 cubic meters of volume, using a total of 12 flights.  

Established in 2008, the Herat JMOU continuously ensures the airport management of passengers and cargo, in compliance with the principles and standards of Safety and Security established by the international codes and regulations of the aviation sector.

The NATO "Resolute Support" mission is made up of military personnel from 39 nations, with the aim of contributing to training, assistance and advice for the Afghan Institutions and Security Forces in order to make them self-sufficient and able to autonomously guarantee the security of the country and its citizens. The Italian contribution, expressed with personnel and means of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Carabinieri, has so far enabled the western region of Afghanistan to achieve some of the highest safety and development standards in the country.
