The change at the top of the Joint Air Task Force (JATF), the air component of the mission that manages the Herat airport and coordinates the assets of the Air Force, took place today at Camp Arena, headquarters of the Italian contingent in the mission in Afghanistan. Military present in the operating theater.

The pilot colonel Vittorio Carminato, after six months of intense and fruitful work, has handed over the job to his colleague from Paris Dario Antonio Missaglia.

The change, which assisted the commander of the Train Advise Assist Command West (TAAC-W) Brigadier General Enrico Barduani, took place in an extremely reduced form and without the deployment of departments, in compliance with the limitations imposed by the covid-19 emergency.

The JATF, since the start of the "Resolute Support" mission (January 1, 2015), in addition to managing the military airport and jointly with the Afghan civil counterpart (Afghan Civil Aviation Authority), the Herat international airport, has supervised training of local civilian operators to take over the management of airport services.

Furthermore, the personnel of the Italian Air Force contributes to the training and specialist training of some essential professional figures such as flight controllers, fire-fighting procedures, meteorology and flight safety managers.

The Herat airport is among the first airports in Afghanistan (the first ever in the western part of the country) to have reached high quality standards in the supply of essential services and is rapidly moving towards the achievement of total management autonomy by the local authorities.
