It was July 12, 1996 when, to celebrate the bicentenary of the Tricolore (January 7, 1797), Nave Luigi Durand de la Penne and Nave Bersagliere left the port of Taranto to begin Operation Oceani Farano for a world tour that would last well 266 days, during which the 560 men touched 35 ports in 25 different countries, covering more than 51 thousand miles.

Staff training, development of logistical support chains in areas of unusual gravitation, meetings with Italian communities abroad also aimed at making the support of the Motherland feel strong, an effective contribution to the national foreign policy in carrying out those own tasks of the tradition of the Navy as a historic and first ambassador in the world, these are the main objectives of the circumnavigation completed on 4 April 1997 with the transit of the Taranto swing bridge.
