Ended in Naples the lighthouse campaign of ship Levanzo

31/07/14

Ship Levanzo finished the lighthouse campaign in the Gulf of Naples. The dual-use activity involved replacing: the anchoring boulder of the Secca del Torrione meda (located in the Procida canal between Miseno and the island of Procida) and the substitution of the boulder and the carriage (approximately 33 meters) of the meda of Secca della Cavallara (located near the Nisida peninsula).

The averages are an artificial reference point anchored to the bottom by a boulder - weighing seven tons in these two cases - which indicate the limit of the navigable area.

The activity took place under the supervision of the commander of the Fari Area of Naples, of the civilian personnel of Marifari Napoli and with the contribution of an SDAI team (Insidiosi Antimazzi Defense Service) of the Taranto headquarters. The operations of disembarking and boarding the boulders and carriages have kept almost all of the crew engaged for hours in seafaring and force maneuvers.

The Service of Lighthouses and Maritime Signaling operates, in the sector of navigation aids, in favor of all sailors passing through the waters facing the Italian coasts and in ports of national interest. The responsibility of the Service is entrusted to the navy by the 1911.

The activity is relevant for safety at sea as the optical maritime signals are used to indicate the presence of hazards, to help recognize the coast, to indicate the correct route and, in general, to provide reference points for the navigator. They are located on the coast, at the entrance to the ports, on the breakwaters, on the headlands, on the rocks, on the shoals or floating in the sea.

Because of their function, they must therefore always be in perfect conditions of efficiency for the safety of navigators.

Nave Levanzo, which is based in Augusta (SR), is now moored in the Port of Naples for the preparation of future training activities.
