Help 730 migrants in the Sicily channel from the Navy

02/04/14

The amphibious ship San Giorgio and the Vega patrol boat were engaged yesterday and overnight in the rescue to two boats arriving from the North African coasts with 730 migrants on board; among them 124 women and minor 29.

Rescue interventions were necessary due to the overlapping of people on board that compromised the buoyancy of the means of luck on which migrants without individual life jackets were traveling.

The boats were identified thanks to the use of the helicopters on board the San Giorgio ship and the Mistral frigate during patrolling operations.

Nave Vega then transferred the rescued people to the San Giorgio ship, which will arrive in Porto Empedocle as part of the day for the landing of the migrants.
