(To Marina Militare)

Ship Galatea, hydro-oceanographic unit of the Navy set sail from the port of La Spezia to head towards the Tuscan archipelago, the first stage of the Hydrographic campaign 2024 which will see the unit engaged from May to October. The surveys that will be carried out will respectively be those relating to the sea stretches of: Scoglio d'Africa, Egadi Islands (Strait of Sicily), port and coast of Naples, Island of Capri, Island of Ischia and Pontine Islands. Ship Galatea During its hydrographic campaigns, it carries out activities such as the study of bathymetry and sampling of the seabed, the collection of oceanographic data and the determination of the topography of the coastline and port works. During navigation, tide gauge measurements are also carried out to record variations in mean sea level, analyze sound propagation in water and study currents and the seabed. The data obtained with the on-board technical-scientific instruments are valorised by hydrographic operations center on board (COI) by specialist hydrographic personnel through the use of software and are then subsequently sent to the Navy Hydrographic Institute, the State cartographic body, which updates the cartography and nautical documentation in force with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of navigation for the benefit of sailors.

The 2024 hydrographic campaign is therefore underway and will involve all the ship's on-board personnel Galatea for 150 days.
