Ship Galatea during the 2024 hydro-oceanographic campaign at Lo Scoglio D'Africa

​Nave Galatea, hydrographic unit of the Navy, concluded the first part of the hydro-oceanographic campaign which took place in the stretch of sea in front of the Scoglio d'Africa, near the Island of Elba. The main objective of the mission was to collect both bathymetric and oceanographic data and the characterization of the seabed useful for the creation of detailed maps by the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy of Genoa, which are fundamental for ensuring navigation safety.

During the operations, several families of dolphins were also spotted and recorded: the stretch of sea in the Tuscan archipelago in which the unit operated is part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, an area of ​​protection and protection for various species of marine mammals.

The knowledge of cetaceans and the tracking of their sightings allows the Navy to contribute with ever greater effectiveness to the conservation of the marine environment.
