Mare Nostrum: The rescue of the weekend

During the weekend the naval and naval aircraft have been continuously involved in the rescue of the many migrants arriving from the coasts of North Africa.

Between Friday and Sunday evening, more than 2500 people were assisted by ships engaged in the Mare Nostrum operation, including the frigates Aliseo and Fasan, the Corvette Sfinge and the amphibious ship San Giusto and the helicopters on board.

The 1311 migrants that the frigate Fasan will land this morning in the port of Taranto are the result of interventions carried out between Friday and Saturday in the channel of Sicily south of Lampedusa.

On board the amphibious ship San Giusto instead there are 1189 migrants rescued by navy ships, from the units of the port authority of Porto Peluso, Dattilo and other minor patrol boats and some merchant boats intervened in assistance.

Last night the last rescue event by the frigate Aliseo ended: 227 migrants including 40 women and 95 minors who will be transhipped on San Giusto ship. The amphibious ship will land tomorrow in Salerno all the migrants it has on board.
