(To Marina Militare)
14/02/25

On Thursday 13 February 2025, the "Filippo Montesi" assembly hall of the "E. Carlotto" barracks took place Lectio Magistralis entitled “Global Mediterraneans” held by Dr. Francesco Zampieri, a leading figure in the national geopolitical panorama.

The event offered a unique opportunity to reflect on the connections between maritime spaces and global strategies, paying particular attention to the role that marginal seas play within international competitions and the evolution of the concept of narrow seas

The speech opened with greetings from the Commander in Chief of the Naval Fleet, Aurelio De Carolis, who underlined the importance of a strategic reflection on contemporary maritime scenarios and their evolution in the context of global security.

During the lectio, Dr. Zampieri introduced the concept of the Enlarged Mediterranean, overcoming the traditional approach that identifies the Mediterranean as a closed geographical entity, highlighting, moreover, how the evolution of geopolitical and strategic dynamics has led to a conceptual extension of the Mediterranean, including maritime spaces of crucial importance such as the Red Sea, the Gulf of Guinea, the Pacific Ocean, the North Sea and the Arctic. This vision takes into account the growing interconnection between trade routes, the projection of naval power and the emergence of new hybrid threats, ranging from technological competition to the militarization of the straits.

In conclusion, Dr. Zampieri stressed the importance for naval forces to develop an integrated and multidimensional strategic vision of maritime security. The increasing use of advanced technologies, the use of platforms unmanned and the Multi-Domain Warfare are essential elements to address emerging challenges in the most contested maritime theaters. The meeting concluded with an exchange of views between the speaker and the officers present, confirming the topicality, relevance and great interest aroused by the topics discussed during the conference.
