The Aviere and Rimini ships enter the Black Sea with the SNMCMG2

10/07/14

Last 4 July, the second NATO Permanent Mine Countermeasure Group (SNMCMG2), currently under Italian command with team patrol Aviere (Flag Ship) and Rimini minesweeper, entered the Black Sea and reached the port of Burgas (Bulgaria).

The group is made up not only of Italian units but also of the British chase-mine CHIDDINGFOLD and the Turkish AKÇAY and will participate in a multinational exercise organized by the Bulgarian Navy called BREEZE 14 which will end the 12 July.

Deployed in the Mediterranean, with the main purpose of researching, locating and subsequently neutralizing any underwater explosive devices, the SNMCMG2 represents a specialized force for immediate reaction, in the event of a crisis, but also an effective tool to ensure the safety of navigation and to increase the “Maritime Situational Awereness” in particular with regard to the terrorist threat and illicit trafficking.
