From 12 to 18 September 2024, the frigate Martinengo took part in EUNOMIA 5-24, a multinational exercise, carried out in the waters off the coast of Cyprus.
Organized with the aim of improving interoperability and joint reaction capability to different types of threats, the exercise saw the frigate Martinengo cooperate with French, Greek and Cypriot naval and air assets.
In detail, after an initial integration phase carried out in the port of Limassol (Cyprus), the sea phase took place from 15 to 18 September, which saw the crews train in a synergic and joint manner in countering threats above and below the surface, also through shooting activities with artillery systems.
Particular focus was placed on simulating a crisis scenario in which a "Non Combatant Evacuation Operation" was planned, the objective of which was the evacuation of civilians from a crisis area.
Finally, the participating naval and air assets also carried out series of exercises aimed at increasing joint search and rescue capabilities, in which the joint rescue coordination center based in Larnaca, Cyprus.
At the end of the training activities, the training took place on board the Greek frigate Elli, Distinguished Visitors Day during which the marine brigade team Saint Mark, embarked on a ship Martinengo, simulated a helicopter insertion with the method fast rope.
The event was attended by numerous civil and military authorities including the Cypriot Minister of Defence, the French and Greek ambassadors and a representative of the Italian diplomatic mission in the Republic of Cyprus.
The Navy was represented by Rear Admiral Alberto Tarabotto, tactical commander of the operation Safe Mediterranean.
EUNOMIA 24 has allowed the crews involved to consolidate the techniques and procedures necessary to cooperate synergistically with the allied navies in a basin, such as the Eastern Mediterranean, of fundamental importance for the geopolitical balances that move within it.
