Ship Trieste, the largest unit ever built for the Navy by the national shipbuilding industry since the post-war period to date, began its elementary training (Tir.Ele.) on 3 February 2025 in the waters of the Gulf of Taranto, under the guidance of the instructor staff of the Navy's naval air training centre (MARICENTADD).
The Tir.Ele., lasting six weeks, represents an essential training phase, planned taking into account the operational peculiarities and versatility of use of the multi-role amphibious unit LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock).
The training course includes a series of activities of increasing difficulty, involving the ship Trieste in exercises on all forms of combat, aimed at achieving full operational capacity.
During the Tir.Ele., the crew will make the most of the know-how acquired in the specialization courses provided by the training center, deepening the knowledge of the systems and equipment on board. The training activities will include the conduct of the unit in coastal waters, even in conditions of poor visibility, seamanship maneuvers, procedures and management of events of the so-called damage control, defense from multiple threats and management of health emergencies.
A significant moment of the journey will be the delivery of the amphibious module, which will see the involvement of the Landing Forces of the San Marco Marine Brigade, further confirming the unit's ability to operate in complex scenarios.
At the end of the training, thanks to its intrinsic characteristics and operational flexibility, the ship Trieste will further strengthen the Navy's projection and intervention capabilities, making a decisive contribution to maritime security and the protection of national interests.
