At the end of an intense period of maintenance work at the Fincantieri facilities in Muggiano, the submarine Romeo Romei — a unit belonging to the U212A class, 2nd batch — returned to sea on Saturday 10 May 2025, at the end of a complex and delicate re-watering manoeuvre.

The entire operation took place in the waters facing the Gulf of La Spezia thanks to the synergic commitment of the Romei crew, the highly qualified technical personnel of Fincantieri and the Port Authority. The activities began on the morning of Friday 9 May, with the positioning of the submarine on the deck of the semi-submersible unit Fjord, responsible for the release into the sea. Subsequently, the units moved to a previously identified area, characterized by seabeds suitable for the controlled immersion of the vessel. The final phase of the operation took place on Saturday 10 May, successfully completing the return of the unit to the sea.

The Submarine Romeo Romei, like all the assets of the submarine component, represents a key element of the Navy's underwater capability. The underwater dimension is now more than ever a strategic domain, relevant not only for deterrence and information gathering functions, but also for the projection of maritime presence and the protection of national interests on the seabed, an increasingly central area for energy security, freedom of navigation and the protection of underwater infrastructures. In this context, the Romei contributes significantly to maintaining maritime superiority and awareness, operating in a covert, persistent and autonomous manner even in complex and dynamic scenarios.

The maintenance stop, now in the final stages, of the submarine Romei It is part of a broader program to maintain the best operational conditions of the naval fleet, ensuring that the units have the tools necessary to face the challenges posed by the modern maritime security context.

In the coming weeks, the submarine Romeo Romei will undergo a series of trials in port and at sea, aimed at verifying the efficiency of the on-board systems and certifying full operational readiness. In parallel, the training activity of its highly qualified crew will continue.
