Exercise "Woodex": From the coast to the mountains

How far does the maritime domain extend? To what extent can a force projected from the sea affect the balance of power on land to the point of forcing an adversary to reorganize its forces and distribute itself, dispersing its combat power?

The answer lies in the concept of coastal operations, the current frontier of amphibious operations.

Forces projected from the sea to the hinterland, thanks to increasingly efficient vectors and command and control measures with wide extension radius, are able to maintain a high level of awareness of what is happening on the ground.

The possibilities of operating in profoundly different environments are multiplying, and therefore require training aimed at developing combat capabilities in all climatic conditions and on different types of terrain.

In this context, the annual exercise called 'Woodex', carried out at Camigliatello Silano (CS) between the last ten days of November and the first of December, provides a window of acclimatization in a harsh climate for the amphibious forces that in the coming year will then be employed as the Littoral Expeditionary Group (LEG).

The Sila mountain area allows you to improve your ground combat capabilities in a wooded environment, to experiment with climbing rock faces using tactical materials and to learn the correct use of the clothing provided to withstand long periods of exposure to the cold.

The amphibious infantryman thus trains to operate in multiple conditions with limited resources, developing a logistical independence that allows full sustainability of operations autonomously for extended periods of time. Precisely the ability to change environments and adapt to them distinguishes an average infantryman from a specialized one and therefore widely employable. The amphibious context is extremely demanding from this point of view, and the varied training touches on every nuance, at sea and on land.
