“Dynamic Mirage 25”: Technology at the Service of Operational Needs

From 20 to 31 January 2025, “Dynamic Mirage 25 – (DYMG 25)” took place at the Italian Navy Programming Centre, one of the most important exercises of NATO’s “Dynamic Series Exercises”.

DYMG 25 is a tactical exercise in lead MARCOM, carried out through the connection and the use of synthetic training tools, such as "sample centers" and simulators. It is the second exercise Live Virtual Constructive-Training/Distributed Synthetic Training (LVC- DST) conducted in the “maritime” domain, under the responsibility and coordination of NATO.

The DYMG 25 aims to train command teams and personnel in charge of managing the operations of national and allied naval units and air assets, through the use of simulation systems located both on board and on the ground within specific "warfare areas" or war scenarios, increasing the level of verisimilitude of the synthetic exercise to a real one.

The recent edition saw the participation of operational personnel from the PPA (Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessels) Morosini e Thaon of Revel, as well as the FREMM (European Multi-Mission Frigates) Bergamini and the DDG (Guided Missile Destroyer) Mimbelli, coordinated, from an operational point of view, by personnel from the Navy's naval air training centre.

The complex hardware/software infrastructure of the programming centre has allowed the training of the crews of the aforementioned national naval units, classified at the level of Task Group, in a virtual synthetic scenario distributed on the NATO exercise network CFBLNet (Combined Federated Battle Laboratories Network).

The perfect synergy between the professionalism of the operational staff of MARICENTADD and those of the technical staff of MARICENPROG has allowed the creation and conduct of structured tests on an incremental basis, with a particular focus on the various forms of struggle. Basic scenarios have gradually evolved, up to the operational conduct of "multi-threat" scenarios, aimed at managing the Joint Common Operational Picture (JCOP), of underwater, air and surface threats in a complex and "three-dimensional" scenario.

In conclusion, the Dynamic Mirage 2025 It was not only an important training opportunity, useful for consolidating the training of naval unit crews in particular complex naval scenarios, but it also represented an excellent opportunity for integration and verification of technical-operational interoperability at an international level, useful for consolidating and perfecting the use of simulation systems in a context Live-Virtual-Constructive and Distributed Training.
