Submersible Flotilla Command: support for U212

13/06/14

Yesterday the submersible school of the Submarine Flotilla Command of Taranto hosted the 24 meeting between the Italian and German delegations.

The Joint Board for In-Service Support (JBISS) is a working group born from the decision of the Italian and German defense ministries to collaborate for the construction and maintenance of 10 identical submarines (4 for Italy and 6 for Germany) of innovative U212A class, characterized by highly technological solutions among which the eco-compatible propulsion system with hydrogen and oxygen stands out.

The JBISS is part of the joint support organization for submarines that operates to ensure continued cooperation between the two nations in the U212A project. Collaboration that takes the form of a continuous exchange of materials, knowledge and personnel thanks to which it has been possible to create those "economy of scale" mechanisms that have made it possible to considerably reduce the costs of building and maintaining these brand new vehicles and above all optimize the resources and the efficiency of the fleets of both countries.

The U212A program between Germany and Italy not only represents a unique example of perfect integration between the two marinas but also between the respective governmental and industrial organizations, and is a precursor in the process of ever-increasing integration between the European armed forces.

2005 German and 2007 Italian submarines (Todaro and Scirè) entered service between the 4 and the 2: other 4 submarines (Italian 2 and German 2) will be delivered already by the 2015 / 16.
