In the afternoon of today 2 August, at the Maritime Military Arsenal of Taranto, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the gate boat that closed the Ferrati basin gave way.

The port boat closed the basin, which had been emptied of water for a few days to allow preparatory operations for the entry of a naval unit undergoing maintenance.

At the time of the event there were no personnel or vehicles in the basin, or near it. Checks are underway to establish the cause of the collapse and whether there has been damage to the structures.

The Ferrati basin, among the largest in Europe, is capable of hosting ships the size of an aircraft carrier Cavour.

243 meters long, 35 meters wide, it was built in 1916 and was subsequently named after Edgardo Ferrati, famous for the recovery of the battleship Da Vinci, carried in the basin upside down (photo).
