03 April 2025: at the Fincantieri shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Genoa), 8 months after the signing of the relevant contract, the traditional construction start ceremony of the first of 2 new-generation FREMM EVO frigates took place, which - in the coming years - will join the 10 units belonging to the FREMM EVO class. Bergamini.

The new class of multi-mission units, with a ship length of approximately 144 meters and a displacement of approximately 6700 tons, will be entirely built and fitted out in the FINCANTIERI Riva Trigoso-Muggiano shipyard in Liguria and will include the integration of the most modern engineering technologies available on the naval market in addition to the resolution of obsolescence for all systems and plants installed on the previous FREMMs in service in the armed force; a concentration of state-of-the-art technologies especially in terms of automation, maneuverability and ability to counter multi-dimensional threats.

The two new FREMM EVO will benefit from the technical improvements already achieved with the FREMM ASW Enhanced (“Spartaco Schergat" and “Emilio Bianchi”) currently being completed and soon to be delivered to the Navy.

As with all modern military vessels built by the national shipbuilding industry, advanced criteria of modularity, versatility, flexibility and autonomy will be taken into account and validated from the early construction and fitting out phases. These units will have overall capabilities configured to provide a balanced contribution in all forms of combat, support for land operations in coastal environments, sea-control operations to protect maritime communication lines and straits and naval interdiction, finally capable of inter-operating in contexts joint/combined

The sober but highly significant event represents the first milestone held on the shipyard for the FREMM EVO program and is one of the concrete results of the application of the contents of the multi-year A/R program n. SMD 03/2023, which provides “design, development and acquisition of n. 2 new generation FREMM frigate type naval units (EVO)".

The event was held in the presence of Admiral Chief Inspector Giuseppe Abbamonte, Director of Naval Armaments, Rear Admiral Francesco Saladino, Head of the 7th Department of MARISTAT, the Head of the FREMM Program of OCCAR, Mr. Luigi Durante, Captain Giorgio Cossiga, Commander of the New Naval Constructions Outfitting Center and Captain Massimiliano Dorsaneo, Director of UTNAV Genoa. For Fincantieri and Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, respectively, Eng. Fulvio Palermo, Head of the Project Management of the Naval Vessels division of Genoa and Eng. Giovanni Sorrentino, CEO of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali.

The delivery of the first of the two frigates to the Navy is scheduled for June 2029 (June 2030 for the second unit).
