Moorings at the front, alongside and not only. In the week from 3 to 7 March seven ship's officers are engaged in the Officer maneuver training (tir.m.uff.) on board the coastal tankers and water transporters of the 4th naval division (COMDINAV4) in the harbour of Augusta. This activity will allow them to better prepare for the subsequent attendance of the Naval Command School, which will lead them to assume their first naval command on board Navy units.
Il maneuver training involves the ships of the third auxiliary ships group (COMGRUPAUS3), in particular the coastal tankers "Favignana" and "Salina" and the water transport vessel "Tirso", all engaged in mooring and unmooring maneuvers, conducted by young lieutenants under the supervision of the commanders of the same units. This training is also aimed at developing the management skills of the functional teams on board, the cinematic sense and the ability to give the correct orders and manage communications on the bridge. These are just some of the tools that the officers acquire during the training process whose culmination is represented by the attendance of the Naval Command School.
Within the training pillar of the Navy, the 4th Naval Division plays a particular role as the headquarters of the Command school. All activities related to the training of officers in conducting maneuvers in port are planned and conducted at the School, including tir.m.uff., which exploit the use of naval units in force in the third auxiliary ships group and, when available on site, also other units dependent on the other GRUPAUS based in the La Spezia and Taranto headquarters.
Specifically, the tir.m.uff., lasting one week, is carried out in the harbour of Augusta. The internship is developed on board the designated minor naval units and has a purely practical connotation. The theoretical activity is carried out remotely, with the sharing of video lessons dedicated to the maneuvers with the participating officers, before arriving in Augusta.
The commanders of the participating units, under the supervision of a coordinating officer with adequate experience in the Division, act as instructors and deal with the main criteria of mooring, anchoring and buoying maneuvers. The vessels used are mainly of the coastal tanker (MCC), water transport (MTA) and coastal transport (MTC) type.
During the first outing at anchor, during the tir.m.uff. an evaluation officer of the Command school allows attendees to watch a standard demonstration maneuver for each type.
Il tir.m.uff. just started, fourth of the 2024/2025 training year, precedes the 306th session of Naval Command School, which will take place from April 28th to May 30th.
