88 years for Nave Palinuro

On March 21, 1934, at the construction site Anciens Chantiers Dunignon of Nantes in France, the steel plates of the "Commandant Louis Richard" slipped into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean which, for the first time, wet the hull of the ship. A sailing ship designed and built for commercial purposes that was used, in its first 15 years of life, for fishing in the Newfoundland Banks.

In 1950 it was acquired by the Navy and, after important adaptation works carried out by the expert workers of the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard first, and then of the Arsenale of La Spezia, it began its service as a training ship in 1954.

Since then her crew has contributed to the education and training of the students of the Officers' School of Taranto and those of Naval School Morosini from Venice. Moreover, thanks to the charm and elegance typical of vintage sailing ships, she plays the very important role of ambassador of made in Italy and of the traditions of the Italian navy in the world.

The unit is currently engaged in the maintenance activities necessary to keep the great charm and extraordinary beauty of this 88-year-old "Lady of the Sea" unchanged over time.

Happy birthday Nave Palinuro! And as recalled in your motto, we wish you and your crew, "Faventibus ventis".
