30 ° Naval Group and Operation Smile Onlus: solidarity stops in Mozambique

Unbelieving looks accompanied the little patients and their relatives when they crossed the threshold of the aircraft carrier Cavour, the Italian Navy's flagship.

Indices aimed at everything that for younger guests is considered a novelty: a sailor who coordinates group games, a volunteer who inflates colored balloons, doctors and civilian and military nurses who sing clap their hands to the rhythm of music. Nobody better than a child can tell all this: a carefree smile and a sincere look express all the feeling and gratitude for the love received. To welcome them the men and women of the 30 ° Naval Group.

In Mozambique, Operation Smile celebrated its first "landing" by adding a piece to the mosaic of over 60 countries of the world in which the Foundation has been operating since its establishment in 1982; a long-standing synergy between the medical personnel of the Navy and volunteers, which has made it possible to improve the quality of life of children and adults suffering from malformations, burns and traumas.

To assist and coordinate the pre / post-operative phases is Maila Gatti, Head of Operation Smile Italia “In 24h patients are usually discharged, but thanks to the logistics availability of the Portair Cavour we can offer them the opportunity to stay on board ensuring comfortable accommodation with breakfast, lunch, and dinner for free ”.

The post-operative phase will continue on the ground with the operators of the same Association assisted by local medical students. A winning team, which at the end of the break was able to bring home a great result: 40 screening and 29 interventions for a total of 82 screening and 64 operations from the beginning of the Humanitarian Mission. "Walking in 2 is medicine" reads a Mozambican proverb, and it would be appropriate to add "surfing in 4 is solidarity".
