The "Joint Stars 2017" exercise is the largest joint-force exercise organized by the Defense for this year and brings together, in a coordinated and synergistic manner, the "Lampo" exercise activities of the Italian Army, "Mare Aperto" of the Italian Navy and " Vega "of the Italian Air Force. Precisely due to its intrinsically inter-force nature and its wide-ranging scope, the "Joint Stars" is entirely planned and managed by the Joint Forces Operations Command, based on the directives and intent formulated by the Chief of Defense.
The training event, which will begin on Monday 16 October and will continue for more than ten days involving several areas of our country, will involve many units of the three Armed Forces, with the precise aim of increasing and supporting interoperability, a key success factor in military operations today.
This edition of the "Joint Stars" also has a very particular value, since it will also constitute the moment for the achievement and validation of the essential operational capabilities (Initial Operational Capability) for the National Sea Projection Capacity. This is the name that indicates the amphibious landing force, necessary to allow the National Military Instrument to have "expeditionary" capabilities to be able to conduct operations that include the insertion, starting from the sea, of a "Landing Force" in the environment. hostile, uncertain or permissive. The core of this "Expeditionary Joint Force" consists of the "Lagunari" regiments of the Italian Army and "San Marco" of the Navy, capable of activating all the "combat", "combat support" and "combat service support" functions "thanks to the integration of additional capabilities already existing in the individual Armed Forces.
During the exercise, which will also include NATO arrangements, the capacity of the 'Italian Joint Force Headquarters to plan and conduct a "reduced" operation of the type of evacuation of civilian personnel from crisis areas (Noncombatant Evacuation Operation).
In short, the "Joint Stars" will be a real test that will provide an opportunity for the Armed Forces to demonstrate their ability to size, plan, prepare, deploy and support commands and units in an inter-force context.
