General Portolano at the NATO Chiefs of Staff Committee in Brussels

17/01/25

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano, participated on 15 and 16 January in the Chiefs of Staff Committee of NATO, in Brussels.

The meeting represents a very important event for the Alliance, characterised by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the emergence of new threats in many of the geographical areas bordering NATO itself.
New challenges require the adoption of capabilities appropriate to the need to ensure the defence of the Alliance and international stability, involving both military and industrial capabilities, promoting increasingly effective cooperation between partners.

Interoperability, digital challenges and coordination were some of the main topics addressed, in order to manage the evolution of a threat increasingly generated by the deterioration of the stability of countries affected by climate change, the lack of energy resources and the proliferation of criminal phenomena.

The meeting was particularly significant for having seen for the first time the participation of the Chiefs of Staff of all partner countries, in particular those of the South side of NATO, in which Italy has played and continues to play a decisive role.

General Portolano, on the sidelines of the works of the committee of leaders had a meeting with SACEUR, General Chris Cavoli, and participated in some bilateral meetings with NATO allied and partner countries, in order to strengthen relations in the security sector with actors of great relevance for Italian interests.

Among these, in particular, Azerbaijan, Switzerland and Turkey, as well as meetings with delegations from Israel and Iraq.
