At 40 years from the tragedy of Monte Serra, Marina and Aeronautica united in memory

On Thursday 3 March 1977, at 15:05, a C-10 of the 130th aerobrigata with 46 students of the first class of the Normal Courses of the Naval Academy of Livorno took off from Pisa airport for a flight of acclimatization, with the accompanying officer Emilio Attramini and five crew members. For reasons still unknown, a few minutes after take-off, the plane hit the slopes of Monte Serra: there were no survivors. The same year, on board the training ship Amerigo Vespucci, the pupils of the first class who survived this tragedy chose the name "Invicti": never defeated and never divided.

Friday 3 March 2017, exactly forty years later, the memory is still alive and indelible. For this particularly heartfelt and exciting anniversary, the traditional commemorations this year saw the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, team admiral Valter Girardelli, alongside the civil, religious and military authorities.

Particularly touching was the Holy Mass in the parish church of Calci, crowded with families of the victims - led by the president of theFallen Association of Monte Serra, Mr. Nicolo 'Tomatis - of members of the course Invicti and representatives of combat and weapon associations.

The most solemn moment was the deposition of the laurel wreaths at the Shrine-Lighthouse, erected on the site of the tragedy in perennial memory of the dramatic event. Here the Invicti, guided by their chieftain, Admiral Cavo Dragone, after the silence of order and in the shadow of their flag, they remembered, name by name, all the classmates who died in the accident and in the years following the cry "present ".

Emotion and closeness will also be expressed on the day of tomorrow 4 March, on the occasion of the 11th Grand Prix of Monte Serra "Ragazzi del Vega 10", an uphill foot race through an evocative path that links the Certosa di Calci to the feet of the Sacrario-Faro. The event, organized by the Pisa Road Runners, is a UISP (Italian Union of Sport For All) event open to all FIDAL members, with the support of the Municipality of Calci and local voluntary associations as well as military corps, including the 46 ^ Air Brigade of Pisa and the Naval Academy of Livorno, whose students participate in force in the event.
