Cagliari-Pisa hospital flight with a Falcon 50

31/01/14

Yesterday, a newborn, admitted to the neonatology ward of the University Hospital of Monserrato (Cagliari) due to a serious heart disease, was transferred urgently to the "Pasquinucci" heart pediatric hospital in Massa on an Air Force aircraft Military.

The request for transport, which was necessary to guarantee the immediate patient specialized medical care, sent by the hospital to the Cagliari Prefecture, was received by the Situation Room of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, which ordered the immediate execution of the flight.

The aircraft, a Falcon 50 of the 31 ° Stormo of Ciampino (Rome), landed at the "Mario Mameli" airport of Elmas-Cagliari at 13: 05 and started again, at 13: 39, for the airport of Pisa, where about 1 flight time arrived after.

The newborn, housed in a special thermal cradle and accompanied by his father, was assisted during the flight by a doctor and a nurse from the Cagliari hospital. Arriving at the "Galileo Galilei" airport in Pisa, the patient was immediately transferred, in an ambulance, to the Massa hospital, about 50 km away.

The Cagliari-Elmas airport currently represents, for the whole southern part of Sardinia, the most used airport for this type of flights, as it is close to the main hospital facilities of the capital.

The aircraft of the 31 ° Stormo di Ciampino are used for state transport and for public utility missions, such as the emergency medical transport of the sick, severely traumatized and organs for transplants, as well as for interventions in favor of people in any case in risk situations. The latter activity, given the imminent danger to life of the people transported, requires a level of readiness, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
