Flight of a C-27J to save a child

04/02/14

This morning a C-27J of the 46ª Pisa Air Brigade transported a two-month-old child from Palermo airport to Rome Ciampino airport. The urgent transport, requested by the Prefecture of Palermo to the Summit Situation Room of the General Staff of the Italian Air Force, had become necessary due to the serious condition of the child, in imminent danger of life.

The Air Force transport aircraft thus took off from Pisa to the Sicilian capital where it embarked the little one inside a thermal cradle. Once he arrived in Rome Ciampino, the little patient continued his transfer aboard an ambulance that took him to the Bambino Gesù hospital, where he was awaited for the necessary treatment.

The 46ª Air Brigade, every day, makes available to the community two of its aircraft, with their crews, for any emergency medical transport like today. The loading capacity of the Brigade's aircraft makes it possible to board medical equipment and even an ambulance. These abilities allow the transport of patients who must necessarily remain in ambulances and under strict medical supervision, increasing their chances of survival and making the transfer to the most suitable place of treatment extremely rapid.

The Air Force has always been involved in the field of medical transport. As evidence of this commitment, this year the proceeds from the sale of the Air Force calendar will be used to finance the "Put the heart" project of the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome for the construction of a new and modern Cardiac Surgery (TIC) ), a highly specialized center for heart disease in children able to respond adequately to new care needs. Recently Prof. Giuseppe Profiti, President of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, recalled how 'The proximity between the Air Force and the Bambino Gesù Hospital, which took off for years, is renewed on every occasion in which mutual collaboration leads to saving the life of a child in Italy or in foreign countries, for a transplant or for a humanitarian intervention '.
