Last Thursday an Antonov AN-30B aircraft in transit from the Salento department took off in the early hours of the day to continue the planned mission, as part of the "Open Skies Treaty". The aircraft, which arrived the previous day at the Brindisi airport, was used in a reconnaissance flight on the military structures of our armed forces.

On board the Antonov, a crew composed of Russian military experts supported by Italian expert personnel, belonging to the Italian Air Force and the Navy.

On this occasion, the Salento department provided the necessary technical and logistic support service, ensuring ground assistance, air traffic control, meteorological service and coordination for refueling.

The "Open Skies Treaty" provides for a series of aerial observations made by military aircraft in the skies of the countries adhering to the agreement. The latter assigns all participants the right to carry out observation flights over the territories of any other Member State and the duty to accept observation flights over their own territories in line with the modalities established by the treaty itself.

The Brindisi Airport Detachment, placed under the Logistics Command, ensures support for the "peacekeeping" (peacekeeping) operations of the United Nations Global Service Center (UNGSC) and "humanitarian" operations of the United Nations Humanitarian Emergency Base (UNHRD). The department also provides, 24 hours a day, 24 days a year, assistance to civil aviation air navigation services, to passing aircraft belonging to NATO countries, providing logistical and administrative support for armed force entities. of the Brindisi area.
