In the context of the reorganization of the air navigation services of the Italian Air Force, launched in close coordination with the Industrial Plan of ENAV SpA, an important milestone was reached on Thursday 28 November 2024 towards the progressive transition of the coordination and control center (SCCAM) of Brindisi on the joint military center of Rome. The intervention, in line with the planned review of the airspaces of military competence, affected the transit of the "Northern Sectors". The relocation of the remaining sectors of Brindisi SCCAM is expected within the first months of 2027.
The reorganization, through the enhancement of the professionalism of the controller and technical personnel involved and through the use of modern technologies, aims to centralize operational, maintenance and technical-logistical support services, ensuring a more effective and safe management of the airspace of competence and military flights. The careful synchronization with the joint activities conducted by ENAV foresees that the transit will take place at the same time as the merging of the ENAV Area Control Centers of Brindisi on Rome and, subsequently, of Padua on Milan.
Following the transit of the SCCAMs, the reorganisation of the air navigation services of the Air Force provides for the merger and therefore the management optimization of a number of approach services (APP), currently located at military airports.
The SCCAMs ensure support to military air operations through the coordination and control of the operational air traffic, the management of the Airspace of competence and the coordination of the Air Defence activities in the context of the general air trafficTheir co-location within the regional control rooms of ENAV SpA, as required by current regulations, allows for effective coordination of air traffic under their respective jurisdiction to the benefit of flight safety.
