From January 25th to February 1st, the 37 first-year students of the “G. Douhet” military aeronautical school attended, at the AM airport detachment of Dobbiaco, the “mountain survival techniques familiarization course”, aimed at stimulating in the young participants the spirit of adaptation and the ability to manage complex situations.
The Dobbiaco detachment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Nicola Bolzan, by virtue of its peculiar location in the national territory, is the ideal location for this type of activity, being the highest military airport in Italy.
During the seven days of training, the young boys and girls of the course Zenith, accompanied by Col. Mauro Nazzi and the permanent staff of the Institute, held theoretical and practical lessons and excursions in snowy mountain environments in the Alta Pusteria area during which they had the opportunity to learn some techniques for building emergency shelters using snow.
The last few days have seen the students of the Air Force high school also experiment with the main procedures for recovering missing persons in the event of an avalanche using the ARTVA system (Avalanche Beacon).
The course is part of the school's three-year training offer plan Douhet. The choice to include this type of peculiar extra-curricular activity is aimed at preparing young boys and girls to face situations in which it is essential to know how to manage psycho-physical stress, develop a strong spirit of aggregation and mutual help. Courses like this are able to stimulate creativity, facilitate communication between participants, improve the spirit of personal and group adaptation.
The “Giulio Douhet” military aeronautical school, inaugurated in 2006, is a secondary school that offers courses for the last three years in the classical and scientific fields, which can be accessed by public competition. The purpose of the Institute is to promote balanced growth in students from a human, cultural, moral and physical perspective, so that they have the necessary skills to become good citizens and face the challenges of tomorrow, whatever future choices they decide to undertake.
The Dobbiaco airport detachment, dependent on the air team command / 1st air region of Milan, is the northernmost command of the Air Force in Italy, guarantees support for mountain survival courses (Flight Safety) and training units, as well as continuously carrying out the detection of meteorological parameters on the ground at the times and in the manner established. The department also provides for the actions of competence for the management of the mountain holiday "Villa Irma", one of the organizations that, within the Defense Administration, carry out social protection activities for members of the Armed Forces and their families.
