Remembrance Day at the "Douhet"

28/01/14

Monday 20 January, as part of the activities planned for the 27 January celebrations for "The Day of Remembrance" - 69 Anniversary of the release of the deportees from the Auschwitz concentration camp - was held, for the first time, at the Air Force Military School "Giulio Douhet" a meeting between the School Students and a representative of the Jewish Community of Florence, to reflect and deepen the meaning of the celebration and more generally on the theme of racism and marginalization.

The meeting, carried out in the "Round Table" mode, was coordinated by the Professor of History and Philosophy, Prof. Benerice Rossi, who intervened on the subject for historical and philosophical aspects, which were also examined by projecting films of interest historical / documentalistico.

In this context, the topic “The forgotten Holocaust of the Roma people” was addressed by Professor Rossella Rossi. Particularly touching was the participation and testimony of Mr. Umberto Di Gioacchino, representing the Jewish Community of Florence, who, through the story of his personal history, offered an exhaustive historical picture from the years of deportation and extermination to today.

The School Commander, Colonel Claudio Icardi, invited the students "to understand that story to the end and to remember so that what was was never repeated, overcoming stereotypes and prejudices". The event ended with the reading of a step of the writings of Primo Levi.

The activity is part of the interdisciplinary projects of in-depth study of current and historical issues, aimed at helping students to reflect on what is happening and has happened with a critical sense and awareness, in order to "destroy the dangerous worm of intolerance and prejudice "- as stated by a pupil during the final debate.
