Sud-Sudanese crisis: AM supports the UN

In the period 29 December - 12 January, the Brindisi Air Force Detachment, in synergy with the United Nations personnel, provided day and night support to the flight activity carried out by the C-17A Globemaster aircraft belonging to 36 ° Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), as part of the "peacekeeping" and "humanitarian" operations that the Global Service Center and the Humanitarian Emergency Response Center (UNHRD) carry out for the populations affected by armed conflicts and by the natural disasters.

The flights carried out made it possible to transport 24 containers containing about 200 tons of equipment and supplies stored at the Global Service Center (UNGSC), hosted by Italy within the Brindisi detachment, fundamental aid to support the United Nations Mission in the Republic. of Sud Sudan (UNMISS) .The first flight, coming from Dubai (United Arab Emirates), arrived in Brindisi on Sunday 29 December at 18.21 and, after loading operations, it left again on Thursday 2 January at 08.43 to Juba , capital of South Sudan. In the following days, coming from Djibouti (East Africa), the C-17As reached Brindisi and, having completed the loading of materials and refueling, they left for the South Sudanese capital.

The Air Force has provided the necessary support by taking care of technical ground operations, air traffic control and meteorological service, in addition to coordinating the operations for refueling aircraft.

The Brindisi Detachment, placed under the Logistic Command, in addition to supporting the United Nations, provides 24 hours on 24, 365 days a year, also assistance in air navigation services for civil aviation, for passing aircraft belonging to to NATO countries, providing the command functions of the Aeronautical Presidium through logistical and administrative support to the Armed Forces of the Brindisi area.
