The work of the military and civil technical personnel of the 25nd Engineer Department of the Air Force ended on Saturday 2 April, designed to increase the availability of beds for the COVID19 emergency at the Celio Military Polyclinic in Rome. The hospital, identified as Covid-Hospital reference point for Central Italy, it was enhanced with 50 new intensive and semi-intensive therapy stations.

The hospital was inaugurated yesterday morning by the Minister of Defense, Hon. Lorenzo Guerini, accompanied by the Chief of Defense Staff, General Enzo Vecciarelli, by the Army Chief of Staff, Corps General Salvatore Farina, and by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Squad General Alberto Rosso .

The infrastructural interventions, which began on 6 April last, involved the construction of electrical systems, the adaptation and implementation of the air conditioning and ventilation systems, and the construction of medical gas systems at Pavilion 19 and the S3 connection of the hospital. The new 50 workstations will be added to the 100 ordinary hospital beds already present at the Policlinico del Celio and dedicated to Covid19 patients.

To ensure compliance with the timing imposed by the health emergency, the Logistics Command Infrastructure Service has set up a Task Force of 28 units including officers, non-commissioned officers, graduates and civilian defense workers, specialized in the direction of works and in the construction of electrical and special systems for complex infrastructures such as, for example, airports. The need to operate in a hospital environment already strongly committed to facing the current health emergency and avoiding any possible interference with the health activity of the Celio Polyclinic, has imposed tight shifts, night and without interruption, even during the Easter holidays.

This initiative is part of the Framework Agreement for cooperation on the subject of Public Health between the Ministry of Defense and the Lazio Region and the most recent agreements with the S. Giovanni - Addolorata Hospital and with the L. Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases.

At the same time as the works assigned to the Air Force, the 6th Army genius regiment worked, in coordination with the Air Force genius component, to carry out all the delicate and complex works of building adaptation and functional restoration of the rooms in halls 19 and S3 fitting, and the great professionalism and perfect synergy between the two components has made it possible to achieve the desired results within the allotted time.

The 2nd AM genius department of Ciampino, located under the control of Logistics Command Infrastructure Service, ensures the construction and efficiency of the infrastructures used by the Air Force located in the operational bases and bodies of the Regions of Tuscany, Lazio, Sardinia and Campania, through employees detached technical services infrastructure, through the execution of studies, surveys, designs and contracts.

It also takes care of the execution of the work in direct administration through the use of the employee of the 8th field engineering group, an operating unit equipped with all the professionalism and means necessary to design and build broad spectrum infrastructures, with particular specialization in the airport infrastructure sector, ensuring the Armed Force an autonomous and timely intervention capacity in the civil and plant engineering sector both at home and in OFCN operations.
