The Italian irrelevance on the international scene

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, immediately after the raid that killed Iranian general Qassam Soleimani, contacted the foreign ministers of the allied nations to explain Washington's strategy.

Our foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio, has not been contacteddespite the important contribution of the Italian Armed Forces to the Middle East and the strategic importance of our country.

Obviously, the Farnesina alleges that the only members of the UN Security Council (as if the Americans had never respected this international body) were contacted, however, the outrage remains.

The truth is that our government (together with the Parliament) is unable to develop a foreign policy functional to the interests of the nation.

The official press releases of Palazzo Chigi, in these first days of the new year when the tension in the international scenario is rising considerably, speak of invitations to moderation, of dialogue, of the sense of responsibility of the parties (!). Our politicians, so long-winded in their social media releases, have not found anything better to say.

Italy has many commercial interests with Iran: so should we be relegated to passive actors, without the countries that matter explaining their plans to us?

Yesterday the Baghdad Parliament deliberated the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraqi territory, including the Italian military who, in addition to the important training activities, gave a significant operational contribution (especially thanks to the special forces of Task Force 44) in the fight against Islamic State jihadists.

Pompeo's "forgetfulness" represents a serious blow to Italy.

Unfortunately, we pay years of wavering attitudes, political instability and little consideration for the defense sector.
