On March 25, 2025, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) and Palantir Technologies Inc.. (Palantir) have finalized the acquisition of the system Palantir Maven Smart System NATO* (MSS NATO) for use within the allied command for operations (Allied Command Operations – ACO) of NATO, marking a major step forward in the modernisation of the Alliance's warfighting capabilities.
“The NCIA is pleased to partner with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and Palantir to deliver the NATO MSS to operational personnel, providing the Alliance with tailored, cutting-edge AI-based capabilities, and giving our forces the tools they need to operate effectively and decisively on the modern battlefield.”, said Ludwig Decamps, director general of the NCIA.
The NATO MSS capability enables commanders and operational units to safely and securely leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in critical military operations. By providing the Alliance with a common, data-driven warfighting capability, across a wide range of AI applications – from large language models (LLMs), to generative and machine learning technologies – the NATO MSS improves information fusion and targeting, battlefield situational awareness, planning and accelerated decision-making.
“We are proud to support NATO’s effort to strengthen deterrence through the adoption of an AI-based warfare platform at SHAPE. This partnership underscores the Alliance’s determination to boldly lead technological innovation”, said Shon Manasco, senior counsel at Palantir Technologies.
Through the NATO MSS, SHAPE plans to accelerate the adoption of other innovative capabilities developed within NATO – including new and emerging AI models, as well as modeling and simulation tools – demonstrating a strong and enduring partnership between the technology bases of North America and Europe.
“The ACO is at the forefront of adopting technologies that make NATO more agile, adaptable and responsive to emerging threats. Innovation is at the heart of our warfighting capability. NATO’s Maven Smart System enables the Alliance to harness complex data, accelerate decision-making and, in doing so, deliver real operational value.”, said General Markus Laubenthal, SHAPE Chief of Staff.
The acquisition of the NATO MSS was one of the fastest in NATO history, taking only six months from requirements definition to system purchase.
The ACO is expected to begin using the new system within the next 30 days.
SHAPE is the military headquarters of the ACO.
