Russian Navy plans to bring new generation Project 21180M Evpatiy Kolovrat icebreaker online in 2022

The hull of the icebreaker ship Evpatiy Kolovrat, the head of class of Project 21180M, was set up at Almaz Shipbuilding Company in St. Petersburg on 12 December 2018.

L'Evpatiy Kolovrat it was built as part of the Project 21180M of smaller dimensions, but more advanced than the previous one Ilya Muromets (Project 21180). It is distinguished by the small size of the hull and the low draft. This series of icebreakers will be equipped with the automated control system Zaliv-LK-21180.

Il Project 21180M is a new generation of Russian diesel-electric icebreaker developed by the Vympel design office in Nizhny Novgorod. It will have a length of 82 meters, a width of 19 meters and a draft of 4,6 meters. The icebreaker will be able to reach a maximum speed of 14 knots with a maximum cruising range of 7.600 miles, with a crew of 28 people. On the flight deck it will be able to accommodate a Kamov Ka 27 class helicopter and at the moment it is not known whether as in the previous version there will be the predisposition to be armed with AK-630 cannon and missiles Club-K inside special containers.

Lo Evpaty Kolovrat It will feature a diesel power plant with three 3,5 megawatt (4.700 hp) diesel generators that supply electricity to both propulsion engines and auxiliary systems. The icebreaker will be driven by three monobloc stainless steel propellers, two driven by azimuth thrusters Steerprops and the third from a fixed centerline. Additionally, the ship will have a 700 kW (940 hp) bow thruster.

The icebreaker is designed to conduct Voyenno-Morskoi Flot boats and ships, tow and deliver goods to remote bases, assist ships in distress in icy conditions. The Project 21180M, will be classified by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping as a category 6 icebreaker, i.e. capable of breaking a 1 meter thick block of ice at a speed of two knots.
