Today 15 May, MBDA signed with OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de coopération en Matière d'Armement – Joint Organization for Armaments Cooperation) a Grant Agreement of the European Defense Fund on behalf of the partners of the HYDIS2 consortium, and the related procurement contract (co-financed by nations) for the launch of the concept phase of HYDIS2 (HYpersonic Defense Interceptor Study - Study of an interceptor for defense against hypersonic threats).

In July 2023, the European Commission selected the project for funding and the Governments of France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands decided to co-finance it.

The signature between MBDA and OCCAR marks the beginning of a three-year study phase, an important milestone whose objective is the selection of the most suitable and effective anti-hypersonic and anti-ballistic concept with the related weapon system architecture.

Coordinated by MBDA, this new phase will allow partners to:

- collect and harmonize the definition of operational scenarios and the interface of weapon systems, taking into account European and NATO roadmaps;

- create a joint definition of each threat based on the knowledge and skills of all partners involved;

- consolidate weapon system requirements and integration across the entire engagement chain;

- select the most appropriate concept of an anti-hypersonic and anti-ballistic interceptor for the needs of European nations, with the associated system architecture, to prepare an evaluation phase and aim for an entry into service date that reaches the horizon of 2035;

- mature technologies that enable the implementation of the anti-hypersonic concept in the next phase of the program;

- create an industrial network to develop future anti-hypersonic missile systems.

MBDA coordinates the HYDIS² consortium which brings together 19 partners and over 20 subcontractors in 14 European countries. Together with MBDA in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, the partners are ArianeGroup, AVIO, Avio Aero, Bayern-Chemie, CIRA, DLR, GKN Fokker, LYNRED, OHB System AG, ONERA, ROXEL France, THALES LAS France, TDW, THALES Netherlands and TNO. HYDIS² represents a central element of the contribution of European states to the defense mission of populations and Armed Forces, in particular against emerging hypersonic threats which constitute a radical change compared to ballistic ones.
