MBDA to develop further laser capabilities with Leonardo

(To MBDA)

MBDA and Leonardo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the joint implementation of Direct Energy Fire Unit (DEW), which integrate the solutions developed by MBDA in laser weapons.

This new Italian initiative complements the laser capabilities developed by MBDA. Tests have already been carried out in Germany with a demonstrator developed by MBDA in collaboration with Rheinmetall, starting with a high precision multi-stage laser tracker and effector integrating several laser sources into a single beam. Another laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) capability is being developed in the UK by MBDA under the name DragonFire, in collaboration with Leonardo UK and QinetiQ, already tested through a high power laser system against air targets. In addition, MBDA has acquired a stake in CILAS, a French laser technology champion specialising as an equipment supplier, developing the HELMA-P solution which successfully passed its first trials in the summer of 2024.

The system that will be developed in Italy will use two power classes, depending on the threat, and will be able to intercept and neutralize nano and micro-drones of different composition. Initially, the Fire Unit will be intended for use on naval units with a possible future evolution for land use. The agreement defines the development of a Fire Unit light of which MBDA will be Design Authority in Italy. This unit will be dedicated to existing naval units capable of supporting the use of lower energy absorption laser weapons. Leonardo will be Design Authority for a High End Fire Unit (high-end) that will be able to equip new naval units.

MBDA will also develop the capability to generate high-power laser beams and Leonardo will develop systems to direct and aim the laser beam onto the target.
The two companies will use their best and most advanced capabilities and laboratories in Italy, sharing technological knowledge in this field in a complementary way.

Starting from the interest shown by the Italian Navy, the Memorandum of Understanding starts a collaboration that will lead to the joint definition of a technical and commercial solution capable of meeting the operational needs of customers. In addition, it will pave the way for a joint promotion of the products resulting from the cooperation. The national supply chains of both companies will also contribute to the project.
