Leonardo: optical systems for the assault rifles of the German Armed Forces

(To Leonardo)
13/10/21

Leonardo, through its subsidiary Leonardo Germany GmbH, has signed a framework agreement with the Bundeswehr, in particular with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), for the supply of a maximum of 107.929 ELCAN daytime lenses Specter® DR 1-4x to be installed on assault rifles, both new and already in service.

The optics will be adapted to the requirements of the Armed Forces. Specifically, an aiming reticle and a housing with an integrated Picatinny rail will be modified. The most important design change is the ability to operate the 1x to 4x magnification mechanism from both sides of the new viewfinder, while maintaining a compact design and robust optics.

The first deliveries of the systems are scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

The new ELCAN Specter® DR 1-4x diurnal optics, already successfully used by several NATO members, is a fundamental component of the optronic system used in infantry missions.

The agreement with the Bundeswehr represents an important boost for Leonardo for the "soldier systems" business, which in the product portfolio includes innovative laser systems, night vision and thermal imaging technologies, equipment already in service with the military and special forces in Germany and in other NATO countries.
